Habits To Help You Live Longer

Healthy LifeCeliac disease is a severe genetic autoimmune disorder, based on the Celiac Illness Foundation, where the ingestion of gluten results in damage within the small gut. A recent study found that four bad behaviors—smoking, drinking too much alcohol, not exercising, and not eating enough fruits and veggies—can hustle you into an early grave, and, in effect, age you by as many as 12 years. Lifestyle factors such as having a calcium-rich diet and exercising frequently can keep bones healthy and minimise the risk of fractures. Sunlight exposure is also crucial to up levels of vitamin D.

Working across three domains – Youth, Work and Lifestyle – the Healthy Living unit excels in identifying the illnesses related to each. Within these three domains we are developing knowledge and expertise in the fields of health, health technology, and personalized health interventions. For instance, we recently built an online youth health platform that provides youth healthcare guidelines and allows parents to find the professionals and advice they need to make the right choices. We also aim to measure and monitor individual workplace exposure to toxic substances, and to give personalized health advice to people with obesity or diabetes.

Stress can cause or worsen symptoms of mania or depression. It is important to learn what causes your stress, ways to identify and deal with stressors, and ways to minimize your day-to-day stress level. Stress may be caused by a variety of factors, both external and internal, some of which you may not be aware of. Repeated or constant stress can lead to tension, chronic pain, anxiety, and an inability to enjoy life. With the right treatment and therapy, you can learn to anticipate and deal with stress, and with support, you can work on breaking out of stressful patterns or situations.

Obesity-related co-morbid health conditions are the second leading cause of preventable death, following tobacco use. One-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese, and the dramatic rise in the prevalence of pediatric obesity has been predicted to lead to a decline in overall life expectancy. Obese children are at high risk for dyslipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Obese children are also more likely to suffer from obesity as adults. Given the large number of children who are overweight or obese, there is an overwhelming need for effective treatment for overweight and obese children.

Think of your body as your physical shell to take you through life. If you repeatedly abuse it, your shell will wear out quickly.
